Hello and welcome to our first community quilt-a-long. I’m Kelly and I am presenting BrisMQG’s first community quilt tutorial.   This month as it is our first we have chosen a simple quilt the tutorial for the full quilt is available via the Art Gallery Blog the pattern is one by Faith of Fresh Lemon Modern Quilts.

The tute I will be showing is how to make a single block from the supplied fabric. Incorporating the colour choices as discussed previously by members via our Facebook page.

The Background fabric this month is a Bella Solid by Moda in Nautical Blue. The focal fabric, to come from Members scrap are to be BRIGHTS in Lime Green, Bright Orange or Hot Pink, one Tone on Tone (ToT) Print or Solid for one block.

Sewers received Background fabric about 22″ x 6″

There really is no hard and fast way to do this.

I have cut the 3 larger pieces 3″ x 6″ required, then turned and cut the 3 1/4 and sub cut 4 x 3″. Finishing with the required

  • 3 x 3″ x 6″
  • 4 x 3 1/4 x 3″

cut your scrap ToT or solid bright orange, hot pink or Lime green

  • 5 x 3″ x 6″

Chain piece this is such a quick block.

Sew the strips together as usual with a 1/4″ Seam Allowance. Iron the seams to the dark side.

When ironing I realised I have picked up the seam going in the wrong direction.

And here it is all together!!!  This quilt has been donated to the Salvation Army Brisbane to assist people in emergency accommodation.
