Sew Day this Sunday

August Sew DayDon’t forget we have our monthly Sew Day this Sunday.

We’ll be getting together at the Hub (171 Dandenong Rd, Mt Ommaney, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia 4074)

Visitors are welcome to attend our Sew Days, and we ask that you pay a casual fee of $7.00 per meeting. If you meet us, and decide we’re your kind of people, then we encourage you to join!  Yearly membership is open to everyone, and if you click the link up top you can easily complete a membership form.

But for this Sunday, please just bring along whatever you’re working on, your machine (if you need it) and maybe something amazing you’ve recently finished for show’n’tell.

We can barely wait for the weekend, so we can get our sew on.

See you there!

Skinny Mini Challenge

Next up on challenges is the Skinny Mini challenge.

These mini quilts will be displayed as part of our Guild stand at the Brisbane Craft and Quilt Fair on 7-11 October 2015.

Members have been challenged to make a quilt that fit within the following criteria:

  • Quilt size is 10″ x 24″
  • Inspired by the Riley Blake cottage garden fabric.

Members are reminded that they do not need to use this specific fabric, just be inspired by it.  This may mean that they use the colours or themes of the fabric, or that the fabric has sparked a thought process and they might come up with something completely different.

Skinny Mini’s will be due in at our September meeting.

If you want to check out the Riley Blake fabric check out this link

March Sew Day

Our March Sew Day was a little out of the ordinary.  Rather than bringing along our own projects, Guild members were encouraged to bring their machines and any scraps they wished to doante.

3 members of our Guild demonstrated different improv styles, which all utilised scraps and we set to work.  After four hours of sewing, we had 3 single bed improv quilts and a cot size improv.

Our members have volunteered to take these unfinished quilt tops home, and they will then be quilted and bound and sent out to good homes.

Teeny Weeny Swap

Thirteen of our members were lucky enough to fill some places in the Teeny Weeny Swap with the GWSMQG and Vancouver. Due Date is the Meeting day on the 16th so we can Express them on the Monday.

Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild

We are very excited here at GWSMQG to announce our collaboration with Vancouver MQG, and Brisbane MQG combining forces to take part in the Teeny Weeny Swap! This swap is only open to financial members of these guilds.

The ”Teeny Weeny” bit refers to the piecing, not the actual size of the finished item, which is obligatory in this swap. It can be paper-pieced, patchwork piecing, English paper pieced, improv pieced, which may then be hand-appliquéd, but it must be pieced in some way – machine appliqué is not permitted. The overall look and feel should be intricate, cute and “zakka-tastic.

One of our members Sheridan has made a mosaic  with links to the individual photos within the mosaic, should you feel inspired by these photos.

Swap partners have a choice of what item they would like made for them: pouch, needlebook, sunglasses/spectacles case, collapse-able thread catcher, mug…

QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge!

The MQG is having a Guild Challenge is anyone interested?

The Modern Quilt Guild

We are thrilled to announce the QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge! This is one of the MQG’s largest-scale charity projects and we look forward to getting as many guilds as possible involved in the challenge.

The 2015 QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge is a bit different from the 2013 QuiltCon Block challenge. Please read carefully.

This year’s challenge requires participating Modern Quilt Guilds to work collaboratively to create completed quilts using a predetermined color palette and alternate grid work design. This can be accomplished by using blocks of different sizes, adding negative space, or in numerous other creative ways. We’ll have a series of blog posts about design and color for these quilts.

Week of August 18: Working with the Color Palette

Week of August 25: What is Alternate Grid Work and How to Use It

Leaders of all of the local MQGs will be sent a sign up link in…

Welcome to the Brisbane Modern Quilt Guild

Welcome all, to the Brisbane Modern Quilt Guild!

Our guild was formed in June 2014, and while we are a fledgling group we are gathering members everyday. It is so exciting to share our love of quilting with other ‘like minded’ people. One of the best things about the Brisbane Guild is that most of our members only met each other online before gathering as Brisbane MQG. We have linked together through blogs and Facebook and Instagram and now have made firm friends in real life. It is so exciting to see the guild grow with more like-minded quilty friends.

If you would like to find the official BrisMQG social pages you can simply type @brisbanemqg into your instagram, search for Brisbane Modern Quilt Guild Inc on Facebook or Pinterest, or check the About tab above and follow the Socialise and Contacts tab.

We hold sewing days at Mount Ommaney held on the 3rd Sunday each month, by becoming a member of the Brisbane MQG you can attend these events for free.

If you are not sure if this is the place for you then you are welcome to attend two sew days as a visitor ($6/visit) to try us out.

Guild members can also:
– participate in our online Sew-ins
– take part in our tips n tricks at meetings
– contribute to our community quilts
– participate in challenges and swaps
– attend workshops at a discounted rate
– take part in quilt-a-longs

not to mention get to know other quilters in Brisbane area and become a member of the International Modern Quilt Guild.

For more information about Brisbane MQG explore the tabs above or Like our page on Facebook.

Before I sign off, I just want to say, once more, how thrilled I am that you have found the Brisbane Modern Quilt Guild and welcome. I cannot wait to sew with you.
