Riverfire – blue ribbon

Last year the Brisbane Modern Quilt Guild under the leadership of Vic Mansfield made a quilt called Riverfire.  It was our contribution to the QuiltCon Community Quilt challenge for Feb 16 QuiltCon .  It’s inspiration was of the fireworks over the Story Bridge each happens each September in Brisbane.

Early in October the quilt was entered into the Group / Collaborative section of the Queensland Quilters show at the Craft and Quilt Fair, Brisbane.

Skinny Mini Challenge

Next up on challenges is the Skinny Mini challenge.

These mini quilts will be displayed as part of our Guild stand at the Brisbane Craft and Quilt Fair on 7-11 October 2015.

Members have been challenged to make a quilt that fit within the following criteria:

  • Quilt size is 10″ x 24″
  • Inspired by the Riley Blake cottage garden fabric.

Members are reminded that they do not need to use this specific fabric, just be inspired by it.  This may mean that they use the colours or themes of the fabric, or that the fabric has sparked a thought process and they might come up with something completely different.

Skinny Mini’s will be due in at our September meeting.

If you want to check out the Riley Blake fabric check out this link

March Sew Day

Our March Sew Day was a little out of the ordinary.  Rather than bringing along our own projects, Guild members were encouraged to bring their machines and any scraps they wished to doante.

3 members of our Guild demonstrated different improv styles, which all utilised scraps and we set to work.  After four hours of sewing, we had 3 single bed improv quilts and a cot size improv.

Our members have volunteered to take these unfinished quilt tops home, and they will then be quilted and bound and sent out to good homes.

Teeny Weeny Swap

Thirteen of our members were lucky enough to fill some places in the Teeny Weeny Swap with the GWSMQG and Vancouver. Due Date is the Meeting day on the 16th so we can Express them on the Monday.

Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild

We are very excited here at GWSMQG to announce our collaboration with Vancouver MQG, and Brisbane MQG combining forces to take part in the Teeny Weeny Swap! This swap is only open to financial members of these guilds.

The ”Teeny Weeny” bit refers to the piecing, not the actual size of the finished item, which is obligatory in this swap. It can be paper-pieced, patchwork piecing, English paper pieced, improv pieced, which may then be hand-appliquéd, but it must be pieced in some way – machine appliqué is not permitted. The overall look and feel should be intricate, cute and “zakka-tastic.

QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge!

The MQG is having a Guild Challenge is anyone interested?

The Modern Quilt Guild

We are thrilled to announce the QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge! This is one of the MQG’s largest-scale charity projects and we look forward to getting as many guilds as possible involved in the challenge.

The 2015 QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge is a bit different from the 2013 QuiltCon Block challenge. Please read carefully.

This year’s challenge requires participating Modern Quilt Guilds to work collaboratively to create completed quilts using a predetermined color palette and alternate grid work design. This can be accomplished by using blocks of different sizes, adding negative space, or in numerous other creative ways. We’ll have a series of blog posts about design and color for these quilts.

Week of August 18: Working with the Color Palette

Week of August 25: What is Alternate Grid Work and How to Use It

Leaders of all of the local MQGs will be sent a sign up link in…
