Catching Up on 2021

It’s time to catch everyone up on the activities of the Guild. Yesterday was the 2nd anniversary of the declaration of the Covid-19 Pandemic and we are still here. The Pandemic delivered many challenges to us but we have worked our way through them. We found ways to remain connected throughout our lockdowns. We embraced zoom, for meetings, workshops and virtual sew alongs. We got to visit with each other from the comfort of our own sewing rooms and we got to check out the creative spaces of many of our members courtesy of video technology.

Here in Brisbane, we were fortunate that our lockdowns and gathering restrictions did not last for long. Whilst travel out of Queensland was challenging and difficult due to border closures and the ever changing health restrictions, meeting up face to face as long as we could comply with the social distancing directives has been possible for much of the time

October – December – 3D Pop Star Sew Along

Always on the look out for a challenge the guild could sew together, the committee asked for ideas for an easy, free pattern we could do as a sew along (SAL)

Nikki put her hand up to find a suitable project and after some voting – 3D Popstar was chosen and an email went out in September to let guild members know of our SAL via Facebook, with the following link;

Members were asked to use the following hashtags when posting, so we could all follow along #3DPopstarquilt #bmqgsewalong

With the understanding blocks could be sourced from the guilds stash and quilts donated to our community quilt program or members could use up their own FQ’s

We decided to make this a slow and easy sewalong. We hoped that if we pulled fabric at the start of October, we might have a finished quilt top by our December meeting and finished quilts to show off at our February get together. Each week Nikki sent out a Facebook reminder detailing where we were at, and some encouraging words

                Week 1 – Share your Fabric Pull

                Week 2 – Time to start cutting that fabric

                Week 3 – Lets put together the first 2 stars

                Week 4 – Lets put together stars 3 & 4 this week

                Week 5 – Let’s put together stars 5 & 6 this week

                Week 6 – Let’s put together stars 7 & 8 this week

                Week 7 – Time to stitch stars 9 & 10

                Week 8 – Final two stars 11 & 12

                Week 9  – Time for the borders – Woohoo everyone’s blocks are looking amazing!!

Overall great fun was had by all and we had a good uptake from the members as can be seen by the accompanying pictures
