Brisbane River Dreaming

The Modern Quilt Guild provided us with a palette and a theme – tiny piecing, and a target size, 60 x 75 inches but it was up to us to come up with a design.32952105_10155561838762742_4152843224697798656_n
Brisbane is known for its river and for the beautiful flowering jacarandas that dot its’ suburbs. The Brisbane river winds and meanders its way through the landscape and we used these as the inspiration for our design.

Our design needed to incorporate the required ‘tiny piecing’ as well as involve as many of our members as possible. One thought was to pixelate a map or image of the river and piece all the blocks from one inch or smaller squares – but we soon realised this would make the quilt a massive undertaking and would be difficult to achieve in the time available.

So, we turned to a method that allowed all our members to participate, regardless of individual skill levels, and achieve a cohesive design in a relatively short amount of time – improv piecing.  Members were provided with block packs containing small scraps of coloured fabrics matching the palette and asked to improv piece tiny crumbs of fabric into stretches of river, with occasional random pops of the darker purples to represent our jacarandas. Once all the blocks were received, we assembled and quilted our quilt.  Fiona Kuilboer and Vic Mansfield oversaw the assembly and Jane Davidson wrought the long arm magic required to machine quilt our beautiful quilt.

Our finished quilt represents our desire for a vibrant blue/green toned river meandering its way through a landscape of jacaranda trees. Our quilt travelled to Nashville in February this year and was hung as part of the QuiltCon 2019 Charity Quilt Challenge. Since returning home it has received a 1st place in the Group Quilts section at the Queensland Quilters 2019 Quilt Show held here in Brisbane in October and a 2nd place in the Collaborative or Group Quilts section at the Modern Quilt Show Australia held in Kiama in August.
