Sew Day this Sunday

August Sew DayDon’t forget we have our monthly Sew Day this Sunday.

We’ll be getting together at the Hub (171 Dandenong Rd, Mt Ommaney, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia 4074)

Visitors are welcome to attend our Sew Days, and we ask that you pay a casual fee of $7.00 per meeting. If you meet us, and decide we’re your kind of people, then we encourage you to join!  Yearly membership is open to everyone, and if you click the link up top you can easily complete a membership form.

But for this Sunday, please just bring along whatever you’re working on, your machine (if you need it) and maybe something amazing you’ve recently finished for show’n’tell.

We can barely wait for the weekend, so we can get our sew on.

See you there!

Skinny Mini Challenge

Next up on challenges is the Skinny Mini challenge.

These mini quilts will be displayed as part of our Guild stand at the Brisbane Craft and Quilt Fair on 7-11 October 2015.

Members have been challenged to make a quilt that fit within the following criteria:

  • Quilt size is 10″ x 24″
  • Inspired by the Riley Blake cottage garden fabric.

Members are reminded that they do not need to use this specific fabric, just be inspired by it.  This may mean that they use the colours or themes of the fabric, or that the fabric has sparked a thought process and they might come up with something completely different.

Skinny Mini’s will be due in at our September meeting.

If you want to check out the Riley Blake fabric check out this link

March Sew Day

Our March Sew Day was a little out of the ordinary.  Rather than bringing along our own projects, Guild members were encouraged to bring their machines and any scraps they wished to doante.

3 members of our Guild demonstrated different improv styles, which all utilised scraps and we set to work.  After four hours of sewing, we had 3 single bed improv quilts and a cot size improv.

Our members have volunteered to take these unfinished quilt tops home, and they will then be quilted and bound and sent out to good homes.

March 2015 – Stitches and Craft Show

Brisbane MQG stand - 2015 Stitches and Craft Fair The BrisbaneMQG was out in force at the Stitches and Craft Show held in Brisbane on 19 – 22 of March.

With quilts on display from several of our members, we had an incredibly positive response form the showgoers. A crowd favourite was definitely the Fox by Kim D, which had people coming from the other end of the hall to see up close. June S’s Tula Pink Sampler was also a winner with Guild members being told off because the pattern had sold out at the Show. The range of techniques in these quilts meant that we spent lots of time walking around with people and discussing hand dying, wonky piecing, nested churn dashes and flying geese.  But we did have time to sit and do some hand sewing (or unsewing in some cases).

We are looking forward to next year’s show already!

Teeny Weeny Swap

Thirteen of our members were lucky enough to fill some places in the Teeny Weeny Swap with the GWSMQG and Vancouver. Due Date is the Meeting day on the 16th so we can Express them on the Monday.

Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild

We are very excited here at GWSMQG to announce our collaboration with Vancouver MQG, and Brisbane MQG combining forces to take part in the Teeny Weeny Swap! This swap is only open to financial members of these guilds.

The ”Teeny Weeny” bit refers to the piecing, not the actual size of the finished item, which is obligatory in this swap. It can be paper-pieced, patchwork piecing, English paper pieced, improv pieced, which may then be hand-appliquéd, but it must be pieced in some way – machine appliqué is not permitted. The overall look and feel should be intricate, cute and “zakka-tastic.

Swap partners have a choice of what item they would like made for them: pouch, needlebook, sunglasses/spectacles case, collapse-able thread catcher, mug…
